Known as “Johnny Wrestling,” Gargano has faced countless setbacks and heard “no” more times than he can count. Labeled too small to succeed and even rejected after a 2015 WWE tryout, the self-described “chubby kid from Cleveland” refused to give up on his dreams. From play-wrestling on mattresses to aspiring to be the next Shawn Michaels, Gargano’s rise is a testament to grit and passion.

He first made waves in NXT as one half of the iconic tag team #DIY with Tommaso Ciampa. Together, they elevated NXT’s tag division, delivering unforgettable matches and capturing the NXT Tag Team Titles. Though betrayal tore them apart, their story of rivalry and respect continues to define both men’s careers.

After parting ways with The Blackheart, Gargano formed The Way — a tight-knit group including his wife Candice LeRae, Austin Theory, and Indi Hartwell — showcasing his loyalty and leadership.

Despite heartache, personal struggles, and setbacks, Gargano always bounces back stronger. He became the first-ever NXT Triple Crown Champion, competed in more TakeOvers than any other Superstar, and delivered some of NXT’s greatest matches — all while staying true to his fans and his principles.

Returning to WWE on August 22, 2022, Gargano wasted no time making an impact, superkicking Austin Theory and reigniting his passion. Since his summer 2023 return from injury, he reunited with Ciampa, and #DIY’s triumphant victory at A-Town Down Under crowned them WWE Tag Team Champions once again.
